New York—At least four employees of the ShopRite store in New York’s Westchester County tested positive for coronavirus. The company said that close contacts of workers and colleagues are required to self-quarantine.
Joe Colalillo is the CEO of Wakefern, a grocery co-op with 70,000 workers. “Our employees take the role of feeding people very seriously, that’s our job,” Coralillo told CBS News. “That’s our business.”
As staff work with the masses every day, Collillo said that keeping employees and customers safe was their top priority. “In order to protect the environment, we are constantly cleaning all day,” he said.
It is a cool business for the entire supermarket industry. Signs that encourage frequent cleaning, cashier sneezing, and social distance are all standard. Some stores offer rubber gloves.
“I didn’t intend to grab the shoppers with my bare hands,” said shopper Donna Olsen.
Employees are working over time to maintain shelf inventory in several ways and are putting their health at risk as soon as possible to maintain shelf inventory. Gristedes CEO John Catsimatidis said there was no shortage of food.
When asked how much food he needed to buy, Catsimatidis said, “ You need to have enough goods for a week or two, but buy three or four months. Should not. “
Gristedes’ assistant manager Eddie Ortiz describes his staff as energetic frontline warriors. “They stayed for one minute and never hesitated to meet the needs of the people,” he said.
