Taylor referred to Wolf in his maiden speech to parliament in 2013 though recounting an anecdote about “political correctness” and a dispute about a Christmas tree at Oxford University in 1991, when he was a Rhodes scholar.

When Wolf was alerted to the speech on Monday she pointed out that she was not at Oxford in 1991 and accused the minister of “antisemitic dogwhistling”.

On Thursday Wolf said Taylor’s staffer experienced informed her that all media who experienced described on the story had been offered the information that she was not campaigning against Xmas.

In his 2013 speech Taylor said: “It was 1991, and a young Naomi Wolf lived a couple of doors down the corridor. Several graduate students, generally from the north-east of the US, made a decision we really should abandon the Xmas tree in the popular space for the reason that some persons might be offended. I was astounded.

“In our times, the world about, the basis of democracy – free of charge speech – and the foundation of capitalism – home legal rights – are staying chipped absent by shrill elitist voices who insist that they know what is most effective for people who are not remotely like them.”

The anecdote was recurring in a 2014 profile in the Australian Money Assessment.

Wolf stated on Monday she was “long back in the US” and no longer at Oxford by 1991.

“I was a Rhodes Scholar in Oxford 1985-88,” Wolf said. “Angus Taylor recalls me in a fever aspiration at Oxford in 1991 amongst all those warring on Xmas. I was in NYC. Additionally I enjoy Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanzaa. Flattered to be on this mythological detest listing.”

“Catch that anti-Semitic dogwhistle – elitist people today ‘who know what’s greatest for folks who are not remotely like them.’ Referring to Jews like me whom Angus Taylor imagined to be between the warriors against xmas in Oxford in 1991.”

Taylor rejected the accusation he was antisemitic, with a spokesman noting that his grandmother was Jewish.

His business office insisted Taylor recalled looking at Wolf at Oxford, although they clarified the minister’s speech was not referring to Wolf as 1 of the graduates who campaigned in opposition to the Xmas tree.

Taylor is the subject of multiple controversies, which include a NSW law enforcement investigation right after his office supplied doctored documents to media as portion of a political attack on the lord mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore.

A Senate committee this 7 days observed Taylor “consciously applied his position as an MP and minister” to consider to affect an investigation into clearing of grasslands at a house he and his family component-individual, and advisable the primary minister buy an inquiry.

Taylor’s office environment has been contacted for a reaction to Wolf’s statements.

It is not the initial time an Australian federal minister has sparred with a US celeb. In 2017 the then deputy primary minister, Barnaby Joyce, manufactured global headlines following he threatened to have Johnny Depp’s puppies place down when the actor bypassed customs to carry them into the region. Pistol and Boo were flown property prior to Joyce’s deadline.
