Detective Amber Leist
LOS ANGELES (AP) – A police officer was hit by a car and killed after helping an elderly woman cross a street in Los Angeles.
The accident occurred in the Valley Village neighborhood on Sunday when Detective Amber Leist returned to her car after the woman’s support, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva.
Leist, 41, died in a hospital, said Villanueva.
“She was an excellent detective,” he said at a press conference. “She would set a good example with her act of kindness.”
Leist, a 12-year-old veteran from the department, was assigned to West Hollywood Station. She is survived by her parents and two sons.
Leist was at a red light and was waiting to turn left when she saw the older woman fall to the floor, Villanueva said. She parked her car and ran to help the woman cross the street. Leist was hit by a vehicle on the way back, he said.
The driver stopped and tried to help the MP, said Villanueva.
The Los Angeles police are investigating. Further details were not released immediately.
