TAMPA, Florida (WFLA / CNN) – Precipitation over parts of eastern Australia gives reason to hope that some of the country’s destructive fires will be extinguished or at least slowed down.

“A number of firefighters working across NSW are helping here. Although this rain does not put out all the fires, it will certainly make a big contribution to containment, ”tweeted Australia’s NSW Rural Fire Service.

According to 9 News Australia, the past month was one of the driest in December when New South Wales had the lowest rainfall in Australia at just 7.8 millimeters.

Meteorologists said that it has rained in several states in the country for more than a month in the past 24 hours.

But officials warn that a flash of lightning could start new fires.

In the meantime, wet weather in Melbourne before the Australian Open improved air quality.

Forecasters predict that in some areas it will rain more than ten centimeters at the weekend.
