The Golden Globes are changing their laws because of the coronav virus

Although the “Golden Globe” for 2020 has already happened this year, the Coron virus still affects the awards show completely unexpectedly. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced that they are changing rules about the Golden Globe in 2021 because of the major impact of the virus outbreak on the film industry. Many of the 2020 movie releases were delayed as a result of the crisis, while many movies that were in the theaters right in the middle of the outbreak had to come out early on the VOD and digital platforms. And with no end in sight, it can take time for the film industry to return to normal.

Generally, as published by Entertainment Tonight, to be eligible for the Golden Globe movie categories, organizers must arrange the Los Angeles movie screening for all HFPA members before its premiere or within a week of its theatrical rise. However, due to the current closure of theaters and CDC restrictions on gatherings of more than 10 people, this directive has been suspended for films released until April 30.

Instead, distributors can now set up a screening at any time as long as it meets the timing of the 20220 season. They should also send a link to a screening or DVD copy of the movie to friends so they can watch it from home, just like the rest of us are forced to do. The affected films include the world tour “Hunt”, “Emma” and “Trolls”, whose theatrical performances were cut short or canceled due to the epidemic.

The theatrical requirements for films coming out in the middle of the outbreak have also changed. Now, any movie that had a “theatrical release in fidelity scheduled to begin in Los Angeles” between March 15 and April 30 can now go on TV and other digital platforms, but still qualify for the awards program. The HFPA will also consider films that came out under additional exceptional circumstances on a case-by-case basis in the fall, when they would consolidate all eligible films.

This is perhaps just the beginning. The HFPA may make further changes as needed, with the organization explaining that they will keep an eye on the impact of the radiation virus on the film and television industry. In a statement, the HFPA made it clear that they “may extend these suspensions of the Golden Globe Award rules and / or may make other temporary variations to these rules as it deems appropriate in the future.”

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are scheduled to return as hosts of the 2021 Golden Globe for the first time since 2015. Although the show usually takes place in early January, no official date has yet been announced.
