The Service Employees International Union said it has located 39 million N95 masks and will make it easier for healthcare companies to sell.
The union launched a thorough search for masks and other personal protective equipment (PPE) five days ago to respond to the lawsuits of front-line healthcare workers who need more protection and feel insecure in the workplace as they face increasing numbers of patients with COVID-19. SEIU-UHW has 97,000 members working in hospitals throughout California.
Within 48 hours of minute calls and potential suppliers, the union discovered a distributor who had 39 million masks, and since then has found another supplier saying that his company can produce 20 million more masks at the week. The union has also found a supplier who can deliver millions of face shields.
The union said it will sell the masks to states, counties and hospitals for $ 5 a piece, saying it has “no financial interest in transactions.”
Similar N95 masks can be found on the Home Depot website for $ 23.97 for a box of 20, or about $ 1.20 a piece.
The unidentified provider said it has already sold some of the masks in the state of California, to the Greater New York Hospital Association, Dignity Health, Kaiser Permanente, Stanford Health Care, Sutter Health, Los Angeles, Riverside and Santa Clara, according to KNTV.
amNewYork reported that NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital “is burning 40,000 N95 masks a day.”
The chief of surgery expects that number to grow to 70,000 daily.
